The building of the Capitol contains some 430 rooms. On the top of the dome there is a bronze statue representing freedom. The 36 columns which surround the lower part of the dome represent the states in the Union at the time this structure was designed.
It is interesting to know that George Washington himself laid the corner-stone of the building on September 18th, 1793. It was seven years before the Congress moved from Philadelphia to the new city.
The famous White House is the place where the President lives andworks. It is the oldest public building in Washington. Its corner-stone was laid on October 13th, 1792. All presidents exept George Washington (the White House was not yet built in his time) have lived in the White House.
It is a two-storied white building which is situated in Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington. It has 132 rooms.
Not far from the Capitol there is the Washington Monument. This marble obelisk popularly called "The Pencil" rises 160 metres and is hollow inside. There 898 steps to the top. But a special lift brings visitors to the top in 70 seconds, from where they can enjoy a view of the city.The Monument was erected to the memory of the first American President and symbolizes the Nation's respect for George Washington.
