In the centre of San Francisco there is Union Square. It is a wide green square which is the commercial heart of the city. In the old days the Square was used for different gatherings. That is why it was called Union Square. Now Union Square is also a place for all kinds of meetings of protests and celebrations.

 

Union Square is surrounded on four sides by massive buildings. On the left there is a granite column with a bronze figure symbolizing Victory topping it. The column was erected in honour of Admiral Dewey for his victory over the Spanish fleet at Manila in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.
