On one side of Independence Hall there is Congress Hall, where Washington's inauguration for his second term took place, and on the other side there is the Supreme Court Building. Nearby you can see the Carpenters' Hall which contains the chairs used by the first Continental Congress that met in the building of the Carpenter's Hall.
The seat of the government of Philadelphia is City Hall. Its William Penn Tower rises 548 feet (167 metres) above the ground.

, occupying three blocks to the west, contains office buildings, hotels, apartment houses, and commercial facilities.
Philadelphia is an important cultural centre with many fine buildings and a university.
Among the cultural establishments one can find the Academy of Natural Sciences; the Rodin Museum, devoted to works of the famous French sculptor; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Franklin Institute.
