WESTMINSTER ABBEY
Westminster Abbey is not a Cathedral. It is a "Royal Peculiar", royal property. The Abbey is famous for its architecture and historical associations. This ancient fine Gothic building of stone and glass is shaped like a Latin cross. The building was founded in the 11th century. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times.
One of the greatest glories of the Abbey is the Chapel of Henry VII. The Chapel is so wonderfully cut and sculptured that it seems unreal. It contains an interesting collection of swords and standards. The Abbey is famous for its stained glass (витражи). One of the greatest treasures of the Abbey is the oaken Coronation Chair made in 1300.
Westminster Abbey is the church where nearly all the kings and queens have been crowned and where many of them are buried. It is a resting-place for those who have served the nation, whether in science, like Sir Issak Newton and Charles Darwin, literature, or politics.
Westminster Abbey is famous for its Poets' Corner. Many of the greatest writers are buried there: Geoffrey Chaucer, Semuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Alfred Tennyson, Thomas Hardy and Rudyard Kipling. Here one can also find memorials to William Shakespear and John Milton, Robert Burns and George Gordon Byron, Walter Scott, William Makepeace Thackeray and the great American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, though these writers are not buried in Westminster Abbey.
Near the West Door of the Abbey the Unknown Warrior lies in a simple grave commemorating the men who died in the First World War.
