ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL

St. Paul's cathedral is one of the most imposing buildings in London. Londoners like it very much. St. Paul's was built by Sir Christopher Wren, an outstanding English architect. The building of St. Pauls Cathedral went on for 35 years.
From far away you can see the huge dome with a golden ball and cross on the top. The clock tower on the West Side houses the bell known as Great Paul. The interior of the Cathedral is very beautiful. It is full of monuments, the most important of which, perhaps, is the one dedicated to the Duke of Wellington. After looking round you can climb 263 steps to the Whispering Gallery, running round the dome. Being over 100 feet above the floor of the Cathedral, the Whispering Gallery is remarkable for its acoustics. It is called so, because a person standing at the entrance of the Gallery can hear clearly what is said on the opposite side, 107 feet away. Beneath the centre of the dome there is the tomb of Lord Nelson killed at the battle of Trafalgar.
As for Christopher Wren who is known as the architect of London, he found his fame only after his death. He died in 1723, aged 91, and was buried in the building of St. Pauls Cathedral which his genius had created.
