Edinburgh is famous for the International Festivals. Every year at the end of August and early September leading orchestras, opera companies, musicians, dancers, singers and others come to Edinburgh for the International Festival. The Edinburgh Festivals attract people from all parts of the world.

Edinburgh is proud of its world-known writers. There are some monuments to them in the city. The Scott Monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott (not to be confused with the National Monument). It stands in Princes Street Gardens. The tower (with a statue of the writer inside) is 200 feet 6 inches (61.11 m) high, and has some viewing platforms reached by narrow spiral staircases giving panoramic views of central Edinburgh and its surroundings. The Tower looks like a "gothic rocket ship".
