CAMBRIDGE

Cambridge is one of the most beautiful towns of England. It is not a modern industrial city and looks more like a country town. Cambridge is famous for its world-known University, the second oldest university of Great Britain, which was founded in the 13th century. There are more than twenty colleges in it. Many of them are grouped together. Each group of buildings has its own green court with pleasant lawns and flowers. It has also chapels, halls and libraries.
The oldest college is Peterhouse, which was founded in 1284. The most famous is probably King's College, because of its magnificent chapel. Its choir of boys and undergraduates is also well known.
The University was only for men until 1871. In 1871 the first women's college was opened. At present one of the colleges is for men, two of them are women's colleges; the rest take both men and women.
Lying on the river Cam, the town takes its name from the river and the bridges over it. The old university town where most teachers and students live is full of ancient buildings.
